Utah Gov. Spencer Cox signed a bill that prevents healthcare workers from providing transgender youth with hormonal treatments or sex characteristic surgical procedures on Jan. 28.

President Biden's student loan forgiveness plan and cancellation of billions in debt have sparked controversy with Republicans. The skyrocketing cost of higher education has resulted in a staggering $1.75 trillion in student loan debt. It's time to uncover the roots of the student debt crisis and understand how it ballooned to its current state.

The rhetoric that lesbian identities and relationships can only be understood through a heterosexual, gender binary lens is harmful and offensive. Ultimately, this perspective misconstrues the importance that certain terms, such as “masc” and “femme,” have in the lesbian community. The LGBTQ+ community and its allies need to adopt a more inclusive viewpoint on the subject and start accepting that lesbians can identify and express themselves in a variety of ways.

The global health community promotes itself as an organization striving for peace and justice. Yet, its actions display ignorance and insensitivity. The domain of global health is dominated by ideas of power and alteration of others’ cultures, causing these humanitarian outreaches to not be one of right but a continuation of colonialism.

Even without climate change intensifying California’s storms and floods, the California government needs to make changes such as constructing new places to hold floodwater in order to better control floods and using such water more efficiently during periods of drought. 

It’s hard to remember when my inability to understand and speak Japanese really affected me. However, I do remember the dreadful promise I made to myself after my grandmother passed away and I saw my mother crying: “I have to learn Japanese, or else I will be a disappointment to my family.” I was 10 years old when I told myself this.
