New University welcomes its next Editor in Chief

On Nov. 25, 2024, New University Editor in Chief Laiyla Santillan announced to staff that she would be stepping down from her post, which she has held since Spring 2024.

In accordance with New University’s constitution, an application for editor in chief was subsequently opened, with three days for any New University staff member to apply for the publication’s highest position.

Once applications closed and voting followed, it was announced to staff on Dec. 2 that New University’s next editor in chief would be Skylar Paxton ‘26. Paxton has been with the publication for three years, serving as an opinion intern, opinion apprentice, news staff writer and managing editor.

Notably, Paxton helped lead coverage of a UCI student-led Gaza Solidarity Encampment in Spring 2024. Since then, she has covered labor disputes, the University of California Regents and general on-campus news.

Paxton’s term will conclude at the end of the 2024-2025 academic year.

Despite the change in leadership, New University remains committed to providing the UCI community with accurate, timely and ethical coverage.
