FREE: Newport Sports Museum is Orange County’s Best Kept Secret

Across the street from Fashion Island at 100 Newport Center Dr. in Newport Beach, there stands a building that could be mistaken for a bank, a law firm or a real estate company. It’s actually a free sports museum. So why would Newport Beach, a city that doesn’t have a professional or collegiate athletics program have a museum dedicated to sports? Why not?!

Irvine Hits A Speed Bump

After a 4-0 start, the women’s soccer team has faltered somewhat in the month of September, going 1-2-1 since. In comparison, the team only lost three games in 2010. Scott Juniper’s squad must rebound this week against Portland at home on Thursday and on the road at the University of San Diego on Sunday. At 5-2-1, the Anteaters are just behind their 5-1-2 record at the eight game mark of the 2010 season, but the ’Eaters won’t sweat it.

Last season, the UC Irvine Men’s Soccer team finished 14-3-3. Despite winning the Big West regular season championship and boasting an offense that ranked sixth nationally (2.3 goals per game) and ninth on defense (0.63 goals against average), the Anteaters failed to qualify for the NCAA Tournament.

The Mass Effect: Trevor Hoffman’s Jersey Retirement Calls for a History Lesson

I attended Trevor Hoffman’s jersey retirement ceremony on Aug. 21 at Petco Park in San Diego. The No. 51 will never be worn again by a San Diego Padre. Hoffman retired from Major League Baseball at the end of 2010 with 601 saves. The Padres gave their greatest pitcher in franchise history a 1958 Cadillac convertible and a warm reception.
