UCI’s Christian club Cru, hosted a science event, “A Panel on STEM and Faith,” on Feb. 28. Four prominent Christian science, technology, engineering and mathematics professors at UCI discussed their faith and how it coincides with their careers. The panel included Dr. Gregory Brewer, an adjunct professor in the Biomedical Engineering department; Dr. Elliot Hui, an assistant BME professor; Dr. David Reinkensmeyer, a professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and the Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology and BME; and Dr. Jack Brouwer, a professor in the MAE department.
A stabbing occurred near UC Irvine’s campus on March 10 in the student apartment complex Camino Del Sol. According to reports from CBS Los Angeles, the stabbing happened right before 10 p.m.
The Cross Cultural Center (CCC) held a “Culture Night Showcase” March 4 with performances by four different cultural clubs at UCI to give the student body a preview of what to expect from each group during their culture night performances, scheduled to take place in the 2019 spring quarter.
UCI’s Tomo No Kai Japanese Club hosted a “Paint the Past” event on Feb. 19 with two guest speakers, Hatsuko Mary Higuchi and Marlene Shigekawa. This event was held for the “Day of Remembrance” that recognizes the Japanese Americans who were sent to internment camps 77 years ago during World War II.
Well-known environmental activists, writers, and scientists discussed global warming within its most recent context on Feb. 8 and 9 at UC Irvine’s two-day conference, “Fire and Ice: The Shifting Narrative of Climate Change.”
Pro-life advocates erected graphic photos of aborted fetuses on Ring Road near the School of Humanities, sparking controversy among students. The group, who identified themselves as advocates of the Center for Bioethical Reform (CBR) a privately funded, non-profit, secular corporation established and located in Orange County, arrived on campus on Feb. 20.
In response to the recent concerns regarding the allegedly dangerous amounts of asbestos discovered in Rowland Hall during construction, James S. Nowick, Department of Chemistry chair, has indicated that the building is and has been safe throughout construction.
