Benson Boone’s latest single “The Time Of My Life” is distinctly different from his other songs with its somber tone. In only a few days, “The Time Of My Life,” which was released on June 25, has already earned millions of listeners. Unlike most of Boone’s music over the last few years, Boone’s newest song possesses many contradictory undertones within the piece itself. His guitar throughout the song contrasts major and minor chords, creating an overall haunting ambience.
Boone is a 24-year-old American singer-songwriter. In 2024, Boone gained traction with his lead single, “Beautiful Things,” which reached No. 1 on global charts. His other popular songs include 2024’s “Slow It Down,” 2025’s “Mystical Magical,” 2021’s “Ghost Town” and 2024’s “Cry.” Boone’s genre primarily consists of modern pop and pop rock, with his persona being highly energetic and his vocal range impressive.
The “The Time of My Life” YouTube music video begins with a marquee reading “THE TIME OF MY LIFE STARRING BENSON BOONE & ALIX EARLE.” From a visual standpoint, Boone and influencer Alix Earle are performing in a play, acting as the lead stars. Actors have to embody their characters and act accordingly, often not embracing who they really are with their audience. By visually capturing these performative expectations that some musical artists give themselves, it offers a deeper and more introspective take on the reality Boone is facing.
In the video, Boone and Earle are waiting backstage before the play begins. After greeting each other, Earle asks Boone, “Will she be here?” Then the music starts playing, while the next scene displays an empty seat with the word “RESERVED” written on a sheet of paper. Then the scene transitions to a shot of two hands reaching for one another before the musical introduction is added to the melody.
“I am having the time of my life / And I wish that you were still right here / I wish you came along,” Boone sings.
Despite the song’s bittersweet tone, Boone exposes a longing for a person who isn’t a part of his life anymore.
“You, why did you leave me so soon? / Before all the flowers could bloom?” he continues.
Flowers universally symbolize growth and renewal. For Boone to confess that his love didn’t wait for him to truly blossom foreshadows the theme of this song — unrequited loss and heartache. Though he continually sings “I am having the time of my life,” he is showcasing quite the opposite through the rest of his lyrics, presenting a core example of lyrical irony.
“And now that every day is a party / Every night’s a nightmare / Wishing you came along,” the chorus reads.
The repetition of “I wish you came along” represents unfulfilled dreams of Boone and the subject’s relationship. Since Boone’s global success as a musical artist, he is now considered a celebrity. With that comes public acclaim as well as never-ending criticism. Famous artists, such as Boone, may experience natural stressors from all that those external forces put on them. By saying that “every day is a party,” Boone expresses his need for validation and support from the individuals he values the most in his life, including the “you” he is referring to. By admitting that he feels isolated when he is alone at night, he embodies this feeling of sadness, grief and loss.
“If, if this is as good as it gets / Then why is my head such a mess, dear? / Oh, why is it all so wrong?” Boone sings.
This part of this verse continues the portrayal of Boone’s success at such a young age. Despite this, Boone cannot seem to shake the detachment he has inside him.
The bridge ends with, “How can the world keep moving on? / I will never let myself move on.”
These words are significant toward the entirety of the piece. Boone is trapped in an emotional state; while the world moves on, he seemingly cannot, signaling internal suffering of unresolved feelings and profound anguish.
The outro goes, “This isn’t real life / This isn’t over (Move on) / This isn’t real life / This isn’t over, dear (Oh, oh) / It can’t be over, dear.”
The ending reveals true realizations. Boone is in a place of personal denial. This song feels like a dream, but even in a dream, one has to eventually wake up. Although Boone’s newest song is titled “The Time Of My Life,” it has an inherent, sharp contradiction within the lyrics and visual representation of it all. The song acts as a shield against the intense and painful thoughts Boone possesses.
