Amplifying support for the undocumented community

The recent immigration raids in Bakersfield, California, have instilled fear within the undocumented community. These raids mark the beginning of a mass deportation plan by the incoming presidential administration.

The editorial board stands in solidarity with the undocumented student community at UCI, especially those from Bakersfield. Support for undocumented students during these troubling times should be strengthened here at UCI.

Now more than ever, undocumented students need reassurance that UCI is on their side. The university should divert resources to support petitions advocating for undocumented students to access on-campus jobs. Every student deserves equal opportunities regardless of citizenship status.

All students should be able to consider UCI a safe space to learn and express themselves. By declaring UCI a sanctuary campus, the university would create a greater sense of security for students to pursue their education.

UCI can also collaborate with the Dream Center to implement workshops that inform undocumented students of their legal rights in case of encounters with immigration officers. Increasing awareness and providing educational workshops can foster student advocacy.

As students, we must also recognize the barriers that some face in receiving their education. Specifically, undocumented students experience inequality in applying for financial aid and employment. They also live with constant fear for their future and their families’ safety. It is especially important now to elevate the voices of those marginalized by our institutions.

UCI Institutional support for undocumented students should also increase to demonstrate a commitment to providing each student with an equal chance to higher education.

For students impacted by their immigration status or those with family members who are, the UC system offers free immigration legal services to both students and their families. The counseling center serves as another pillar of support for students navigating these uncertain times. Additionally, the immigrant community should be informed of their rights in California when encountering immigration officials.
