The devastating Los Angeles wildfires and the UCI community

The multiple wildfires burning throughout Los Angeles have been both devastating and disappointing news.

The destruction caused by these natural disasters is not new to our community. Orange County has also experienced wildfires that have deeply affected many. Even now, the Santa Ana winds can be felt here in Irvine, accompanied by reports of worsening air quality.

As a broader West Coast community, we have to ask ourselves what precautionary measures need to be enacted to prevent the losses and suffering caused by natural disasters. If a wildfire similar to those raging in Los Angeles were to strike Irvine, how are we to respond to such a disaster? More importantly, what would the recovery process look like afterward? These are questions Los Angeles residents are currently asking themselves, and it’s concerning that the answers remain uncertain.

With the rising number of natural disasters caused by climate change and other factors, it is clearer than ever that more planning and preventative disaster efforts are needed to mitigate their devastating effects. We cannot afford to lose more lives, homes and infrastructure due to ignorance.

Additionally, efforts to assist evacuees and wildfire victims must be reevaluated and strengthened. Consideration should be given to the victims who lack the adequate insurance to rebuild their homes and lives after these disasters. If support is denied to these vulnerable groups, we will witness displaced families and individuals with nowhere to turn.

Stronger, unified support is also essential for those fighting on the front lines taking on these disasters. This includes those providing shelters for evacuees, first responders treating the injured and firefighters deployed to contain these disasters and prevent further damage.

While Southern California is deeply aware of the effects of these wildfires and the distressing news they bring, the response requires compassionate support for those who are facing the disasters firsthand. These disasters can impact anyone — we are all vulnerable.

The editorial board extends its deepest condolences to any UCI community members affected by the Los Angeles wildfires. UCI emergency resources are available for anyone seeking support or assistance. The counseling center is also available for anyone seeking mental health resources during this time.
