The “What Matters to Me and Why” Alumni Series started Fall Quarter with a talk featuring alumnus Omead Afshar on Oct. 17. Since graduating from UCI as a biomedical engineer, Afshar has had many roles including being the current project director for the Office of the CEO at Tesla Motors.
Students in California public universities are the target of the Student Civic and Voter Empowerment Act, a new civic engagement act that consolidates and delegates voter outreach to university administration.
The UCI Wellness Center hosted their second Wellness Workshop with a focus on ‘time,’ on Oct. 24 in the Writing Center. The Wellness Workshop series runs over the course of the quarter wherein every other Thursday from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Writing Specialist Lindsey Allgood and Wellness & Peer Education Programs Manager Natalie D’Azzo host workshops that encourage students to be mindful of their overall wellness. This includes their mental and physical health.

UCI welcomed a new addition to on-campus housing with the opening of the Middle Earth Towers at the beginning of Fall Quarter 2019. Located directly across the Social Science Plaza, the seven-story building with a glass exterior stands apart from its surrounding stone building neighbors. It holds two towers, connected on each floor by a row of common rooms for 480 residents.
UCI announced the official launch of the Brilliant Future campaign, which is the second 10-figure philanthropic effort in its history, on Friday, Oct. 4. Students, faculty and alumni attended the opening of Brilliant Future. Chancellor Howard Gillman, who gave a speech on the funding efforts of the campaign, was also in attendance.
