A pristine, white doghouse sits in Sean Alexander McWillie’s backyard. Outside, it resembles some of the original 1965 Brutalist-style architecture found on campus, like the kind seen at Social Science Tower. The insulation is made from re-purposed Styrofoam and it is completely sustainable. Even the roof, which slopes downward so the water can drain from the back, has a small garden growing from it. Inside, it is spacious and beautiful, perfect for Jolly.
If I had it in me as a first grader to hate Sun Yi-Qiang, I would have. But I was much too feeble, much too timid and much too innocent. So I feared him instead.

For many college students, top spring break destinations include Cancun, Miami Beach, Las Vegas – essentially cities where sun is abundant, the beach is prime and bathing suits are the appropriate dress code. Traveling to Fairbanks, Alaska might round out the bottom of this list where temperatures can fluctuate between 30 degrees during the day to below zero at night, beaches are covered in ice and showing some skin would not be the best idea. However, on the morning of March 19, I hopped on a plane headed to Fairbanks, Alaska for my spring break.

Fall quarter 2007. It was 4 o’clock in the morning and I was up to my neck in Aristotle. I paused for a moment, averting my eyes from that hateful, hateful text, and took a sip of a warm, restoring sustenance.
“Most of you set the curve in school, go off and do great things. These kids are 14, and they don’t know where they’re going to get their next meal.” These were the words spoken at the Dean of Students Winter Leadership Conference in January by Erin Gruwell, a UC Irvine alumna who has become famous throughout the realm of education.
In the fall of 2010, the nation was engrossed by a surge of gay teen suicide. Within the span of a few months, nine gay students committed suicide due to bullying and lack of acceptance from their peers.
