2023 Elections Show Lowest Turnout in UCI History

The Associated Students of UC Irvine (ASUCI) and Associated Graduate Students (AGS) held their elections for the 2023-2024 school year from April 17-21. The results for both elections were released on Wednesday, April 26.

Of the students that voted in the election, 1,288 were undergraduate and 222 were post-graduate. Voter turnout was 4.2% for both undergrads and post-grads, the lowest for any election in UCI history.

Notably, incumbent Engineering Senator Amin “Hollywood” Mansourifilestan lost his re-election bid and will be replaced by third-year Ethan Reynaga. 

Nine candidates were disqualified from the election. According to the elections website, the candidates failed to submit their financial statements by the deadline on April 21. All disqualified candidates have the opportunity to appeal by Thursday, April 27.

As of April 26, the seats for Business Senator, Education Senator, Nursing Senator and the Special Interest International Senator were vacant due to a lack of candidacy. These seats will remain empty for the 2023-24 school year.

Per the ASUCI Elections Code, the First Year Senator’s term ends in the fall quarter and is elected in a separate election. Zeynep Karatas, the student elected as First Year Senator in fall 2022, will remain in that position until fall 2023.

As of April 26, 49 of the 58 AGS Council seats up for election remained vacant. About half of vacant seats were won by write-in candidates and will be filled as write-in candidates accept their positions. 

The Arts Representative race ended in a tie between three write-in candidates that each received one vote. Only two vacancies exist for Arts Representative. Per the AGS Elections Code, a run-off election may be initiated for these seats.

The other half of vacant seats which were not won by write-in candidates were uncontested and remained vacant as of April 26.

According to the AGS Elections Code, a special election may be initiated if more than one-third of positions in the AGS Council are vacant.
